Heltzer Honors Program

WHY SHOULD I BE AN HONORS STUDENT?

Individual Attention

The Heltzer Honors Program provides students with a small liberal arts college experience at a larger institution.  Honors classes are small and interactive.

The Heltzer Honors Program offers a unique community for students and provides students with challenging opportunities within their academics towards becoming an Appalachian graduate. The Honors Program is proud to offer advising assistance with the Honors curriculum and is located within East Hall, downstairs from residential students.

Faculty

Most Honors courses are taught by tenured professors who engage students in meaningful class discussions with other Honors students.  Honors courses are cross-disciplinary and are often team-taught.  Students also have the opportunity to spend time outside the classroom with professors and other Honors students through field trips, service projects, and cultural events.

Instructors in honors are volunteers or are chosen by their departments because of their excellent teaching reputations. Many are senior professors; all have demonstrated a special dedication to the philosophy of honors instruction. All honors faculty members hold doctoral or terminal degrees in their fields. No graduate students teach honors classes. Honors faculty members often host classes in their homes, take students on field trips, and supervise honors theses and other undergraduate research projects. Appalachian faculty who are interested in teaching honors courses should contact the Honors Director in their departments or the University Honors Coordinator.

Graduating Honors Students

About 300 students enroll in some 20-23 honors courses each semester. The number of students who graduate from a departmental Honors program, or who complete the requirements for the designation "Heltzer Honors Program Graduate" averages about fifty each year.

More honors students go on to graduate study than is typical of the general University population. Postgraduate programs available to honors graduates include medical and dental schools, law school, teaching programs, MBA programs, and Ph.D. programs in many disciplines.
