Rotary World Peace Scholarships for study at The Rotary Centers for International Studies in Peace and Conflict Resolution

THE ROTARY CENTERS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDIES

The Rotary Foundation has taken a bold and critical step in its commitment to world understanding and peace with the establishment of the Rotary Centers for International Studies in Peace and Conflict Resolution. The Rotary Centers for International Studies will provide opportunities for scholars to focus on dealing effectively with obstacles, such as war, famine, poverty, and disease that currently impede international cooperation and peace. Through partnerships with universities throughout the world, the Rotary Centers for International Studies will advance knowledge on issues of peace and conflict resolution among the next generation of community and world leaders.

ROTARY WORLD PEACE SCHOLARS

The Rotary Centers for International Studies in Peace and Conflict

Resolution offer individuals committed to peace and cooperation the opportunity to pursue a two-year master's level degree in international studies, peace studies, and conflict resolution at one of the seven Rotary Centers. Applicants selected to study at the Rotary Centers for International Studies are known as Rotary World Peace Scholars.

• Rotary World Peace Scholars are chosen based on their ability to have a significant, positive impact on world peace and conflict resolution during their future careers.
• They have demonstrated a commitment to a career in peace and conflict resolution.
• Rotary World Peace Scholars are expected to excel academically in their selected programs, to accept the academic counsel and advice of the Rotary Center Director, and to obtain a master's degree or certificate at the conclusion of their scholarship period.
• They are expected to participate in an annual Rotary Center Seminar.
• Rotary World Peace Scholars will serve as ambassadors of goodwill wherever they go.
• They are expected to make formal and informal appearances before Rotary clubs and districts, school and civic organizations, and other forums.
• Rotary World Peace Scholars will be expected to participate in district, regional, and international Rotary events.
• Rotary World Peace Scholars are expected to maintain contact with The Rotary Foundation throughout their professional careers in order to advise and assist Rotary International and its member clubs in their efforts to contribute to world peace and understanding. Scholars are also expected to help evaluate and promote the Rotary World Peace Scholarships program.

CURRICULUM

Each Rotary Center university has a unique curriculum focusing on various aspects of international studies related to peace and conflict resolution. They also have comprehensive programs in related fields, such as international law, public health, natural resources and environment, and education and literacy, any of which will provide Rotary World Peace Scholars with appropriate supplemental study opportunities. In addition to master's program course work, all Rotary World Peace Scholars will participate in an annual Rotary Center Seminar. Interested applicants should visit the Rotary International Web site at www.rotary.org or consult the Rotary Centers University Partners brochure (publication 082) for more detailed information on the Rotary Center program at each partner university.

SELECTION AND ASSIGNMENT

Seventy Rotary World Peace Scholars will be selected each year to begin two-year master's-level degree programs in conflict resolution, peace studies, and international relations at the Rotary Centers. Ten scholars will be assigned to each of the seven Rotary Centers. Scholars will be assigned to a center outside of their home country.

ADMISSION AND START OF STUDIES

Rotary World Peace Scholarships are offered for the 21-month program at each Rotary Center. This period includes the three-month summer break between study years in which scholars are encouraged to pursue degree-related activities, such as internships, volunteer work, and research. Rotary World Peace Scholars must begin their studies at the start of the academic year of their assigned Rotary Center. Rotary Centers in the Northern Hemisphere will begin their programs in August, September, or October. Rotary Centers in the Southern Hemisphere will begin their programs in February or March. No studies will begin prior to 1 July of the first year of the scholarship. Rotary World Peace Scholars are responsible for gaining admission to their assigned Rotary Center University. Final admission decisions will rest with the university.

GENERAL ELIGIBILITY

Applicants for the Rotary World Peace Scholarships must have:

• The academic background, training, and work experience required for a master's-level program at the partner universities.
• Proficiency in more than one language (even if they propose to study in a country where their native language is spoken).
• Excellent leadership skills.
• A demonstrated commitment to peace and international understanding through their personal and community service activities and/or academic and professional achievements.
• Citizenship in a country in which there is a Rotary club.

Application must be made through a local Rotary club in the applicant's legal or permanent residence, or place of full-time study or employment. Persons with disabilities and members of Rotary clubs are eligible and encouraged to apply.

The following persons are ineligible for Rotary World Peace Scholarships:

1. Rotarians; Honorary Rotarians;
2. employees of a club, district, or other Rotary entity or of Rotary International;
3. spouses, lineal descendants (child or grandchild by blood or legal adoption), spouses of lineal descendants, or ancestors (parent or grandparent by blood) of any living person in the categories (1) or (2);
4. and former Rotarians and their relatives as described above within 36 months of resignation.

ROTARIAN COUNSELORS

A unique benefit of Rotary Scholarships is the scholar's association with Rotary clubs and Rotarians. Each scholar is assigned a sponsor and a host Rotarian counselor who provide orientation and advice in preparing for and completing a successful study period in another country.

FUNDING

The Rotary World Peace Scholarship will support a Rotary World Peace Scholar for a two-year master's-level degree program at one of the Rotary Centers for International Studies. The scholarship will include funding for the following categories:

TUITION AND REQUIRED FEES: The scholarship will include funding for registration, tuition for a normal course load for the degree program, and other required university fees as defined by the university.

ROOM AND BOARD: The scholarship will include a monthly stipend for 21 months of room and board based on the reasonable cost of student living in the study area. The monthly stipend will be determined by The Rotary Foundation in consultation with the university partners.

TRANSPORTATION: The scholarship will include transportation between the scholar's home and study cities at the start and end of the scholarship period.

CONTINGENCY EXPENSES: The scholarship will include a contingency fund meant to cover the cost of books and supplies, thesis costs, costs associated with ambassadorial obligations, and unanticipated costs. Contingency funds will be provided for each year of the two-year scholarship.

OTHER FUNDING:

Some funding for degree-related projects undertaken by scholars between the first and second years of study, such as internships, volunteer work, and research, will be available but must be applied for during the scholarship period. Scholars must locate funds to cover all expenses which are not specifically funded by their scholarships. Scholarship funds are intended for use by the scholarship recipient only. Rotary World Peace Scholars may be accompanied by their spouses/dependents during the study years. However, no funding will be provided by The Rotary Foundation for spouses, dependents, or anyone other than the scholar.

APPLICATION PROCEDURES AND DEADLINES

All Rotary districts around the world are invited to nominate one candidate for the world-competitive selection each year. Applications generally need to be completed approximately 18 months in advance of the planned study period. Applications are available from the Rotary Web site at www.rotary.org or from local Rotary clubs. Interested applicants must contact a local Rotary club to ask about local application deadlines. Club deadlines may be as early as March or as late as August of the year prior to the study period. For example, an applicant interested in a Rotary World Peace Scholarship for the 2006-08 program year should submit an application to a local club between March 2005 and August 2005. Clubs then forward endorsed applications to the district. Clubs then forward endorsed applications to the district. Club-endorsed applicants compete at the district level. Each district is eligible to submit one candidate to compete at the world level. The Rotary Foundation and the university partners select and then notify the Rotary World Peace Scholars of their Rotary Center assignments by the end of the calendar year in which they apply. Applications submitted directly to The Rotary Foundation without club and district endorsements will not be considered.

Applicants may not enroll in a center located in a country of which they are citizens (with the exception of Japan and the center at International Christian University.) For example, US citizens are not eligible to enroll at the Duke-UNC Center or at the Berkeley Center but instead, need to apply to centers outside of the United States.
