Honors Residence Hall

East HallStarting Fall 2010, all incoming freshmen Honors students are automatically assigned a room in East Hall. Any student who does not want to live in East Hall needs to contact the Heltzer Honors Program in writing at honors@appstate.edu.

Beyond the classroom, the Heltzer Honors Program seeks to maintain a stimulating and supportive community for serious students. Living in East Hall provides special opportunities for students to work together, study together, and share their intellectual and social growth. Special speakers, discussion groups, and activities sponsored by the Appalachian Honors Association are hosted in the lounge and classroom spaces on the ground floor of East Hall; this is also where the Heltzer Honors Program offices are located, further contributing to the sense of a learning community. Community is fostered beyond the residence halls as well. The Appalachian Honors Association (AHA!) provides student-led social and community activities for all Honors students. In addition, Honors students often take extra field trips to places such as New York City (where they stay in a university owned loft) or the Blue Ridge Parkway to study aspects of the course material first hand. Some students attend regional or national Honors conferences or study abroad for Honors credit, while others gain invaluable experiences through service-learning projects sponsored by Honors.

The Honors residential experience can be a transforming experience for a young scholar; sharing their intellectual excitement about their courses and the world with like-minded students gives rise to friendships that last a lifetime.  The opportunity for midnight discussions with classmates extends the classroom learning to insights and knowledge that will endure as long as those friendships.  It is this engaged learning and nurturing of a committed attitude to independent research and understanding that will foster lifelong scholars; citizens who never stop searching, questioning, and studying.
