Honors Thesis Information
The Honors Thesis is the capstone Honors experience, and most complete it during senior year, but with proper planning, juniors can register for thesis credit. The thesis can take many forms: a creative endeavor/
project, scholarly research or a research paper. The format of the thesis should be selected with the thesis advisor to fit the topic. Students completing only
University Honors are not required to complete a thesis in their major, but can complete a thesis in another area of interest as long as they find faculty willing to direct their thesis/ project; they must have a second reader from outside of the director’s department. Students must complete the thesis application form to receive thesis credit (available here).
Thesis credit cannot be added on AppalNet; students must complete a Special Course Request Form (SCRF). Students completing only University Honors can obtain this form from B-9 of East Hall; students completing a departmental thesis (Dept. 4510) should obtain this from their department. These forms should be completed and submitted to the Heltzer Honors Program no later than the second week of classes in the term in which you want the credit. Credit can be separated over two different semesters (fall, spring or summer), but must total at least 3 semester hours. Students completing departmental or college honors should contact their department for guidelines for the thesis.
It is possible for students to write one thesis to satisfy both University Honors and departmental/college honors, but all requirements for both honors must be met. Students receiving both honors should enroll in the departmental thesis course. All students who expect to graduate with honors, whether University, departmental, or college, must submit the thesis application form in the semester in which they receive thesis academic credit. All students must also submit the Honors Graduation Application form prior to the University’s deadline to apply for graduation. Honors students study a sculpture in Washington DC in ART 4515.
