LIVING IN EAST HALL
How do I sign up for Honors Housing?
Only students who have received an invitation to participate in the Heltzer Honors Program may live in Honors housing. Students who wish to live in Honors Housing must enroll in a
section of the Freshman Honors Seminar, HON 1515 by completing the Preliminary Course Registration form on the First Connections website. Students who enroll in a section of HON 1515 are guaranteed Honors housing and will become members of the Honors Residential Learning Community.
Students should also complete the regular housing form on the First Connections website. Students may also indicate a roommate preference, but Honors students must have an Honors roommate in order to live in Honors housing. Students will receive class schedules during Phase 1 Orientation, including their Honors course schedules, but Honors housing assignments will not be made until mid-July. Students will receive notification of room and roommate assignments before classes begin in August.
Honors Learning Community
Beyond the classroom, Honors seeks to maintain a stimulating and supportive community for serious students. East Hall, the honors office and residence hall staff, provide special opportunities within the living and learning community. Here students work hard together, study together, and share their intellectual and social growth. In the basement of East Hall, near the Honors Office is the site for special speakers, discussion groups, or activities sponsored by the Appalachian Honors Association.
Community is fostered beyond the residence halls as well. The Appalachian Honors Association (AHA!) provides student-led social and community activities for all Honors students. In addition, Honors students often take extra field trips, perhaps to the facilities the University maintains in New York or to learn new information regarding a subject from class like the Blue Ridge Parkway.. Some students attend regional or national Honors conferences or study abroad for Honors credit while others gain invaluable experiences through service-learning projects sponsored by Honors.
