Freshman Admissions

Criteria:
Admission to the Heltzer Honors Program is competitive and by application only.  Successful applicants will generally be in the top 5% of their high school class, with Math + Verbal SAT scores of at least 1250 (29 for the ACT) on average. Additional factors play an important part in the consideration process, however, and attention will be paid to evidence of leadership, service, co-curricular activities, and creative endeavors.  This information can be provided in the resumé, which must be uploaded with the application. Applicants are encouraged to provide a detailed, well-supported resumé, as its thoughtful and thorough preparation will have a considerable impact on application consideration.

Application Process
:
The application is found through the First Connections Website, which students may access once they have a completed application to Appalachian State University; students may also apply for the Chancellor’s Scholarship at this site. While the HHP and scholarship applications are separate and reviewed by different selection committees, the supporting materials for both are identical. If you wish to apply both to the Heltzer Honors Program and for the Chancellor’s Scholarship, you simply upload the supporting material twice, once for each application, but it is exactly the same material. The duplicate submission assures that both selection committees receive all of the required items. For the application to the Heltzer Honors Program to be considered complete and ready for review, the student must first have been accepted to Appalachian State University. The following items must then be submitted through the First Connections application link for Heltzer Honors Program review:

1.     An essay (500 words as described on the website)

2.     Two letters of recommendation

3.     A resumé

The deadline for application for Fall 2010 is May 1, 2010, admission is highly competitive and seats will be filled as applications arrive. Thus, earlier applications will have a distict advantage and timely submission is encouraged. Application review will begin in January and letters of acceptance will be sent starting in February.
