Welcome from Director

Welcome visitors to the Heltzer Honors website!  The days have grown shorter and there was heavy frost on the windshield this morning.  The leaves are mostly gone and fall break is behind us; time for the break-neck race to finals! As students prepare to finish their last few weeks, wrap up those papers, prepare for those exams, those lucky few seniors graduating with University Honors in December are putting the finishing touches on their theses.  Winter break is both too close and too far away for all of us.

News since my last entry here is that Biology has proposed an Honors track and are in the final stages of getting it approved.  If all goes as planned they will join Global Studies and Appalachian Studies as the latest departments to add Honors tracks for their students.

The undeclared freshmen and sophomores have been visiting their Honors advisors to prepare for Spring semester and it is wonderful to see how excited most of them are about their fall courses.  “Love & Death” is a big hit as always, but the other Honors First Year Seminars also have their share of die-hard fans (“Darwin” students can be quite fanatic!).  Speaking of fanatic, check out the newly created Heltzer Honors Fan page on Facebook and join today if you are a fan or a fan-to-be.  For those of you applying to the HHP, look us up, scan our website, and maybe give us a visit.  You’ll see what an amazing opportunity this is and that it is our students who make it the remarkable place that it is.

Here’s to a great run up to the end of Fall semester 2009 and, as the leaves all fall away, let us wax up our boards, sharpen our skates, and prepare to hit finals and the slopes with equal fervor!

Happy Thanksgiving to all,

Leslie Sargent Jones, Ph.D
Director of the Heltzer Honors Program
