Honors programs and colleges have been around almost a century, and Honors at Appalachian has celebrated nearly 40 years. You can learn more about the history of the Heltzer Honors Program by clicking here and you can learn about the honors educational concept at the website of the National Collegiate Honors Council (NCHC). Honors programs offer the most academically-talented students the chance to participate in smaller and more rigorous classes, produce original scholarship such as writing an Honors Thesis, and perhaps live in an Honors living-learning community. This provides a more engaging and intellectually stimulating environment for those students who need and demand that opportunity in order to excel and attain their long-term goals. These students are usually bound for graduate or professional schools and they share a pursuit of academic excellence with their student colleagues at the best private institutions in the country, but usually at a much lower cost. However, even some of the pricier private schools are now introducing the honors model as a means of nurturing their most exceptional students.
